Not all Medicare Advantage plans are created equal and it is important for those shopping for this insurance to be prepared to ask the right questions. Knowing what to ask will help you find the right policy.
Will I Be Able to See My Doctor?
Many people have a trusted doctor they go to by the time they qualify for Medicare. Unfortunately, not all doctors accept certain Medicare Advantage policies. Before purchasing a plan, make sure to check which policies are covered by your doctor.
How Much Coverage Do You Need?
Everyone’s healthcare needs are different. You should be aware of your specific healthcare needs so that you can get coverage for what matters most. Some Medicare policies exclude coverage for dental and eye care, for example, so you may need to add coverage for these. Thankfully, Medicare Advantage policies allow you to add coverage and extend limits beyond an Original Medicare policy.
This also applies for additional coverages such as prescription drug coverage (also known as Medicare Plan D) and Medigap, which covers copays, coinsurance and deductibles. Not all insurers offer additional coverages, so shop around between insurance providers. Keep in mind that Medicare Plan D also may have limitations on the types of prescription drugs that are covered. Even if an insurer offers a prescription drug coverage plan, your particular prescription may or may not be covered.
How Much Does Medicare Advantage Cost?
The purpose of a Medicare Advantage plan is to ensure that you can receive medical care and healthcare services without paying too much. This means that it is also important to find a Medicare Advantage plan that is affordable for the coverage you need. Many people end up paying too much for not enough coverage, so be sure to compare quotes among multiple insurers for find an independent insurer to do so for you.
Where Will You Travel and Will You Be Covered?
Some Medicare Advantage plans have limitations on where they will cover you outside of the U.S. Make sure to check your Medicare plan for any exclusions or limitations, especially if you travel or plan to travel frequently.
Overall, make sure to ask any questions you have about your Medicare Advantage policy. Medicare should work for you and it is important that you are not paying too much for coverage that doesn’t suit your needs.
